From beloved romance author Molly Harper ( Half-Moon Hollow and The Nice Girls series) comes the first title in her new rom-com women’s fiction series, Southern Eclectic, which features the lives, losses and loves of the McCready family as they manage their family’s generational funeral home and bait shop (you read that correctly) on the shore of picturesque Lake Sackett, Georgia. ![]() ![]() I reveled in the description of the wanton destruction of an upright piano, “its ivory keys lying like broken teeth on the floor” … the characterization of the Savannah River as “uncoiling from a resting position in Savannah, a huge, blue hydra-headed serpent” … as well as Carol’s introductory tip of the cap to her perpetually upbeat father who “carried gratefulness around like a lucky coin.” But the novel offers far more than sparkling turns of phrase. ![]() I’m a person who has spent a lifetime trying to craft language for maximum impact, and I can honestly say I was blown away by the writing in “March to the Sea.” I can’t count the number of times I read a passage and thought, “Wow!” and immediately reread it. ![]() 7/1/2023 0 Comments Zazoo by richard mosher![]() ![]() Andrew didn't mean for the misunderstanding to happen, yet he's become trapped in his own white lie. And playing video games is, for lots of people, a proper job. Most of what you need you either buy at Hefty Mart or get “fabbed” at a 3D-print shop (which is where our heroine, Flynne, works). “Homes” (aka Homeland Security) is the main power in the land. ![]() The only real money in the economy comes from “building” (a perfect Gibsonian tweak) drugs. There are wounded veterans from foreign wars. We are in a smallish town in the US, where everything is more or less like it is now, only more so. One of the great pleasures of Gibson’s fiction – though he is canny enough to include periodic expository info-dumps to help the confused catch up – is that sense of not being spoon-fed: his futures convince because the reader arrives in them as a tourist and learns their languages by immersion. ![]() 7/1/2023 0 Comments Will eisner sequential art![]() ![]() While ideally the writer and artist should be one, the two functions are now regularly segregated, and while artwork first gets the reader/viewer's attention, writing must control the project.
